When people throw away clothes, most of them end up in trash or burned, not recycled. Only a small part gets reused or recycled. The European Union is now trying to make clothing more sustainable by making new rules for better design, clearer information for buyers, and making companies more responsible for recycling clothes. The goal is to create a “circular economy” where clothes last longer and less goes to waste.
What is the sustainability fashion?
Sustainable fashion means making and using clothes in a way that’s good for the Earth and people. It tries to stop bad things from happening to our planet and helps workers. Also, it wants clothes to last long and not harm the environment when they are made or used.
Main components of sustainability fashion
- Eco-friendly materials – sustainable fashion uses special materials like organic cotton or recycled fabrics that are good for the environment. This helps to reduce pollution and shows they care about responsible sourcing.
- Ethical Manufacturing – sustainable fashion focuses on fair and good ways to make clothes. This means workers get fair pay, safe places to work, and their rights are respected. It wants to make the fashion industry more fair and responsible for everyone.
- Circular economy principles – sustainable fashion uses a “circular economy” idea instead of the old way. This means they like recycling, making old things new (upcycling), and designing clothes to last long. The goal is to reduce waste, use fewer new resources, and change how people think about their clothes, so everything lasts longer.
- Transparency as hallmark – transparency is key for sustainable fashion. This means brands openly share information about how their clothes are made, from start to finish. This helps customers choose items that match their values. By showing everything, sustainable fashion builds trust and helps everyone better understand and be responsible for changes.
Importance of sustainable fashion
Sustainable fashion aims to fix many issues found in the regular fashion industry.
- Environmental impact mitigation
Normal fashion badly pollutes water, causes deforestation, and creates tons of waste. Sustainable fashion tries to lessen these harmful effects by using eco-friendly methods, leading to a healthier planet.
- Ethical practices
The fashion industry has a bad name because of poor worker conditions, especially where wages are low. Sustainable fashion wants to correct this by pushing for fair wages, safe workplaces, and good treatment of workers. The goal is to make the industry more humane and socially responsible.
- Waste reduction
Fast fashion has led to a lot of disposable clothing, creating huge amounts of textile waste. Sustainable fashion breaks this cycle by promoting a circular economy. This means products are designed to be reused, recycled, or repurposed, which reduces the burden on landfills.
- Consumer empowerment
There’s a growing trend of people wanting to buy sustainable fashion. This increased awareness empowers consumers to pick brands that match their values. This then encourages the whole industry to adopt more responsible practices.
Zero waste fashion
Labentine Shala is exploring the connection between fashion and sustainability. She looks at the problems with fast fashion and highlights the rise of slow, eco-friendly fashion. Labentine explains how zero-waste fashion is changing our personal style by focusing on environmentally friendly choices and reducing the impact of our clothes.
Labentine Shala is a rising fashion designer. She was learning from top designers and developing her creativity at Akademia Evolucion.
Her artistic talent was clear early on when her painting, “Medusa,” was among the top ten in a global competition. Labentine gained further recognition when her innovative designs led her to the finale of the Albanian Designers Competition.
She and her fashion brand are an example of zero-waste and sustainable fashion, which is why she’s featured in this article. You can watch her TEDx Talk in the video below.
